If you only have 1 caliper brake, it is best to have one on the front wheel. Front brakes are twice as powerful as rear brakes which can lock up as your weight transfers forward when you brake. Besides, on a fixie, you can use your pedals to provide some braking on the back wheel, increasing braking power even further. If you learn proper braking technique, the risk of going over the handlebars, which many people fear when using their front brake is not a factor.
