Why do people rely on the two party political system rather than create change?

I agree the two-party system has become stale and obsolete. However, the Teabaggers are not the answer, either. They are just as extreme as the far-right and the far-left. Typically from what I've observed, Independents aren't able to generate as much excitement in political campaigns because they don't have the capital backing them, especially in political ads. Most Americans don't pay much attention to politics, except when an election is looming, so most are pretty misinformed as to the reality of many issues.
