Do pacifiers help babies fall asleep?

My 7-month-old daughter may as well be permanently attached to my nipple when she sleeps lately. I think it might have something to do with the impending teeth, but it's making me a little nuts. Unfortunately, the mommy pacifier has milk, which causes gas and belly rumbles if one drinks too much all night long and all throughout naps. I tried to introduce a pacifier to her at about 3 months, but she would have none of it (it was one of those natural rubber ones and I think it just smelled too weird), so I was thinking of getting a BPA-free basic run-of-the-mill pacifier to see if this could perhaps be a suitable replacement for my nipple for most of the night...nutrition is one thing; the mommy pacifier gets sore after a while. Has anyone else out there tried this so late in the game, at least for night time?
